In this exploration, we’ll uncover how systematic kinesiology plays a pivotal role in harmonising hormonal balance, while delving into six essential nutrients that every mum needs to support their well-being after childbirth.
The endocrine system, akin to an intricately woven tapestry, orchestrates the release of hormones that regulate various physiological processes. In the wake of childbirth, this tapestry experiences a beautiful upheaval, with hormones like oxytocin, prolactin, and cortisol taking centre stage. However, sometimes, this dance may lose its rhythm, leading to imbalances that can manifest as postnatal challenges.
Nurturing Hormonal Equilibrium: A Holistic Approach
The marvel of childbirth triggers a cascade of hormonal changes within a new mother’s body. As systematic kinesiologists, we play a crucial role in identifying and addressing imbalances within the endocrine system.
Hormonal glands that we might focus on in an endocrine treatment include the pituitary gland, often referred to as the “master gland,” which governs the release of hormones that influence various bodily functions. The thyroid, guardian of metabolism and energy, and the adrenal glands, regulators of stress response, form integral parts of this symphony. By focusing on these glands, we gently guide these essential components back into equilibrium, supporting emotional stability and preventing postnatal challenges like mood swings and fatigue.
Essential Nutrients for Postnatal Harmony:
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in abundance in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are instrumental in promoting hormonal balance. These essential fats support the production of anti-inflammatory substances, aiding in the reduction of postnatal inflammation and contributing to emotional well-being.
- Vitamin D: Known as the “sunshine vitamin,” adequate vitamin D levels are crucial for hormonal health. Exposure to sunlight, perhaps by taking a walk at lunchtime every day with baby in a sling, and incorporating vitamin D-rich foods like fortified dairy products and fatty fish into the diet can help regulate hormones and support the overall well-being of new mothers.
- Iron-Rich Foods: Postnatally, many mothers experience a decrease in iron levels. Incorporating iron-rich foods such as lean meats, beans, lentils, and leafy green vegetables helps prevent fatigue and supports the body’s ability to produce essential hormones.
- Magnesium: Magnesium plays a key role in muscle and nerve function, and its deficiency can contribute to postnatal muscle cramps and fatigue. Foods such as nuts, seeds, (I always like to set up a breastfeeding snack basket for clients with macadamia nuts and spiced and roasted mixed nuts and seeds) whole grains, and dark leafy greens are excellent sources of magnesium, supporting overall hormonal balance.
- Protein: Adequate protein intake is essential for the repair and recovery of tissues after childbirth. Protein-rich foods such as lean meats, dairy products, legumes, and nuts provide the building blocks necessary for hormonal synthesis and overall postnatal well-being. One of my go to breakfasts for new mums is chicken liver pate on spelt sourdough as it is abundant in vitamin A too.
- Chromium: Chromium is often overlooked but is vital for maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Postnatal hormonal fluctuations can impact blood sugar, and chromium-rich foods like broccoli, whole grains, and nuts support insulin sensitivity, promoting stable energy levels and overall well-being.
Empowering the Nutritional Journey:
As systematic kinesiologists, we extend our expertise beyond hormonal balance to empower mothers in their nutritional journey. Incorporating these six essential nutrients into their diet can complement our holistic approach, fostering a comprehensive strategy for postnatal well-being.
Gentle Guidance Back to Equilibrium:
With the artistry of our practice, we gently guide these essential components back into equilibrium. Through non-invasive techniques, we listen to the body’s whispers, identifying areas of imbalance and facilitating the restoration of harmony. Our approach is one of partnership with the body, respecting its innate wisdom and supporting it in finding its natural rhythm.
By addressing the energetic, physical, emotional and nutritional aspects of postnatal health, we create a harmonious environment where new mums can flourish and thrive.
