I have noticed over the years of running my Kinesiology practice that more people than before are suffering from food sensitivities. As a rule of thumb, we find that there are 4 foods to avoid for optimal health.
Food sensitivities
Sensitivities to food are often confused with allergies. A food sensitivity is when we eat a food that takes more energy to digest than it gives us. Leaving us with a deficiency of energy that can build up. We often don’t know what foods we are sensitive to as their effect is not instant. Allergies are when we eat a certain food and have an instant reaction like a rash, swollen tongue, digestive upset, headache or pain.
Food sensitivities bring our health down slowly. The effects can gradually lead us to unpleasant symptoms or conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, any random ache or pain, IBS, skin disorders and more.
As kinesiologists, we have found that clients are coming with longer and longer lists of food they can’t eat. Within Kinesiology, we talk about some imbalances being compensations for other things. For example, a muscle may not be working because another one is malfunctioning. When it is fixed the other muscle can ‘switch on’ by itself. It is the same with food. Some sensitivities are only present because of other primary sensitivities. When the offending food is removed, the body can deal with the other food without a problem.
Digestion and immune function are key
Sensitivities can be a symptom of ill health but not necessarily the cause. Digestion and immune function are key with sensitivities, as is eating a balanced diet (that is right for you) of fresh food that we cook ourselves.
We have busy lives and convenience food may be seen as an easy option and solution. However, ready meals generally include the main offending foods people are sensitive to in abundance. We can make a healthy meal from scratch with half an hour.
4 main offending foods
Wheat (not gluten)
Highly inflammatory and known for producing achy joints, feeling tired and heavy legs. When wheat is 100% excluded from our diet (for at least 2 months) often other glutens in rye and barley (for example) can be tolerated and even beneficial.
Cows Milk – (not all dairy)
Cows milk is for baby cows. Pasteurised milk is not easily digested by humans. We think milk gives us calcium when in fact, to digest cows milk fully, calcium needs to be drawn out of the bones to help the body to process it which leaves a calcium deficiency. This, along with other additives and the pus content contained in milk, can contribute to many negative health issues. You may like to look up the ‘famous milk letter’ on notmilk.com
Sugar (all processed forms)
Sugar is highly inflammatory and more addictive than cocaine. Processed sugars play havoc with all our systems including digestion, immune and hormonal function. Sugar is
Salt (not Himalayan Salt) We are talking about table salt and salt in processed foods.
We need salt, and we can get most of what we need naturally in good whole foods. However, in processed foods (for instance) 1 slice of white bread contains our daily recommended salt intake for the whole day.! Add another slice with some cheese to make a sandwich. Include a packet of crisps and this simple meal tips us way over the recommended daily amount alone – without the ready meals or other salty snacks.
If we need to add any salt, we recommend Pink Himalayan Salt as it is a whole salt containing many minerals that are good for us. However, we don’t need to overdo that either.
No two bodies are the same
Within Kinesiology we are able to test what foods are harmful to you personally since not everyone is the same (although often, these foods will be the culprit to imbalances within the body)
If we are healthy with no symptoms then being mindful of the above 4 and eating very little of any of them can improve our health further.
If we have symptoms or are unwell then we may consider cutting them out completely for around 3 months. We may well feel improvement straight away but we need to remember that it takes 3 weeks for food to leave our bodies completely (out of all cells and our blood) so the main benefits will come after this time when many of us give up!
